Calvary Baptist Community Center Receives $30,000 State BEANS 2.0 Grant

Kids Meals Connection will help eligible Passaic County families access nourishing free meals through school and childcare programs

Calvary Baptist Community Center (CBCC) has been named one of nine local awardees statewide by the New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate (OFSA) to receive a $30,000 grant through the Building Expanded Access to Nutritious School Meals (BEANS) 2.0 Program, Thomas Curry, Chief Executive Officer of Calvary Baptist Community Center, announced today.

CBCC will use the award to implement Kids Meals Connection, an 11-month, countywide initiative operating August 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The project will increase awareness of and participation in school meals, childcare nutrition programs, Summer EBT and related food-security resources by combining community outreach, education, trusted partnerships and individualized resource navigation.

PASSAIC COUNTY SCHOOL-MEAL OPPORTUNITY
County meal-count data show 81,303 enrolled students across the reported schools, including 57,250 students certified free and 2,514 certified reduced-price. Average daily participation was 27,857 at breakfast (34.3% of enrollment) compared with 49,751 at lunch (61.2%). Among federally free/reduced-price students, breakfast participation was 39.9% versus 62.5% at lunch.
If breakfast participation among federally eligible students rose to the current lunch participation level, approximately 13,546 additional breakfasts could be served each school day—about 2.44 million additional breakfasts over a 180-day school year. At 2026–27 federal basic breakfast reimbursement rates, that represents approximately $6.1 million in potential additional federal reimbursement, with the opportunity potentially higher at qualifying severe-need schools.
“Calvary Baptist Community Center has a long history of meeting families where they are and connecting our community with resources that strengthen children and families,” said Thomas Curry, Chief Executive Officer of Calvary Baptist Community Center. “Through Kids Meals Connection, we can help families understand what is available, complete the school meals application when needed, and connect with trusted people who can help them navigate the process. This investment also creates an opportunity to bring more available federal nutrition resources into Passaic County.”
BEANS supports county-based initiatives designed to expand access to and participation in school and childcare meal programs while advancing Focus Area 3 of New Jersey’s Statewide Food Security Strategic Plan. Kids Meals Connection will use tailored education, outreach, county-level coordination, two-way community engagement and closed-loop referrals to strengthen community-driven food security.
CBCC will establish a Kids Meals Connection Network of schools, childcare providers, faith communities, healthcare providers, libraries, municipal agencies, food pantries and community-based organizations. Planned collaboration includes 4Cs of Passaic County and outreach to Paterson Public Schools, Passaic Public Schools, Clifton Public Schools, Passaic County Human Services and other county partners.

Kids Meals Connection: From Awareness to Access
A central component of the initiative is the recruitment and training of Community Food Ambassadors from schools, childcare programs, faith communities, healthcare organizations and community-based organizations. These trusted messengers will help families understand school meal eligibility, reduce stigma and misinformation, and connect residents with school meals, CACFP, At-Risk Afterschool Meals and Suppers, Summer EBT, SNAP, WIC, food pantries and other supports.
Kids Meals Connection will prioritize outreach to working ALICE households, immigrant and multilingual families, families of children with disabilities and communities experiencing persistent poverty. Outreach will take place where families already gather—including schools, childcare centers, houses of worship, libraries, health and resource fairs, youth programs and community events.
“Food security is about more than providing a meal—it is about making sure families know what resources are available, trust the information they receive and have someone who can help them navigate the process,” said Dr. Lanisha Makle-Ridley, Kids Meals Connection Project Team Lead. “Our goal is to build a network where a family can enter through a school, childcare center, church, library or community program and be connected to accurate information and meaningful support.”
Eligible families are encouraged to complete the 2026–27 School Meals and Summer EBT Application and return it to their child’s school when required. More New Jersey families qualify for free school meals through expanded state income eligibility, while federal eligibility also determines access to programs such as Summer EBT. Kids Meals Connection will help families understand these distinctions and complete the appropriate application.
With support from Hunger Free New Jersey, the statewide BEANS grantee, and in collaboration with peer grantees across New Jersey, CBCC is beginning implementation by developing multilingual family resources, formalizing community partnerships, recruiting Community Food Ambassadors and planning countywide outreach. Through June 2027, the project will conduct workshops, resource fairs, family engagement activities, digital outreach, individualized referrals and quarterly network meetings.
Schools, childcare providers, faith communities, healthcare organizations, libraries, municipal agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout Passaic County are invited to participate in the Kids Meals Connection Network or host a presentation for families.

The Historic Calvary Baptist Church Mourns the Passing of Dr. Steven M. Rose

It is with profound sorrow and deep reverence that the Historic Calvary Baptist Church mourns the passing of Dr. Steven M. Rose, esteemed President of Passaic County Community College, an educational pioneer, a visionary leader, a mentor to countless lives, a cherished friend and a brother to this pastor and our entire church family.

Dr. Rose was more than a leader. He was a pillar of progress, a builder of futures, and a bridge of opportunity for generations of students throughout Passaic County and the State of New Jersey. His life’s work was not simply measured in titles or achievements, but in the lives he transformed, the doors he opened, and the hope he instilled in communities often overlooked.

Since assuming the presidency of Passaic County Community College in 1996, Dr. Rose led the institution through a remarkable era of expansion and innovation, more than doubling its size and extending its reach through additional campuses in Wanaque, Wayne, and Passaic. Under his leadership, the college became a beacon of access, equity, and excellence in higher education.

Yet, beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rose’s greatest impact was felt in his relationships. He was a mentor to many, a trusted voice in times of decision, and a man whose wisdom carried both intellect and compassion. To this pastor, he was not only a colleague in community advancement, but a true brother, steadfast, supportive, and sincere.
